Bulls Come Back To Defeat Brown, 3-1

QUEENS, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team overcame a first set loss, defeating Brown, 3-1, on the opening night of the St. John's Kaiser Classic.  The victory improves UB's record to 4-3 on the season.

The Bulls took the contest, 21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 as they outhit Brown, .252 to .145.  After hitting just .171 in the opening set, the Bulls hit .200 or better in each of the final three sets, including .300 or more in the final two sets.

"I am very happy with the presence of our middles tonight as well as the aggressive play at the net and end line," said head coach Todd Kress. "It is important for us to keep up this level of play in our two matches tomorrow."

The Bulls trailed 13-11 in the second set when they went on a 10-3 run to take a 21-16 advantage in the set.  The Bulls scored the final two points in the set for the 25-19 victory.

The Bulls dominated the third set, getting out to a 14-3 advantage.  UB never led by less than eight in the set as it won 25-15.  The fourth set was much of the same, as UB staked out to a 9-3 advantage before Brown came back to tie things up at 13-13.  From there the Bulls went on an 8-3 run to take a 21-16 advantage.  The Bulls held on for the 25-20 victory.

Senior Abby Niekamp led the way with 12 kills and just three errors on 27 total attacks.  Freshman Liz Scott added 10 kills, while Dana Musil added eight.  Sophomore Carissa McKenna had seven kills and just one error, while Christine Fritsche added six kills.

As a team, the Bulls recorded 12 service aces in the four sets, led by five from sophomore Kelly Svoboda.  Niekamp and Musil each added two aces, while three other players each had one. 

Defensively, Svoboda had a team-high 13 digs, while Musil added 10. Sophomore Dani Reinert had nine digs, while also leading the UB offense with 37 assists.  The Bulls added 12 team blocks, led by six from Niekamp.  Scott added five total blocks, while Musil and McKenna each had four. 

The Bulls are back in action with a pair of matches tomorrow at the St. John's Kaiser Classic.  UB will face Northeastern at 9:30 am and the host Red Storm at 5:00 pm.
