BUFFALO, NY – Third-year head coach Todd Kress has announced his schedule for the upcoming 2011 season. The Bulls will take part in four tournaments and will have 14 non-conference matches in addition to their 16-match conference schedule. In all, the Bulls will play four teams who went to the NCAA Tournament last year.
The Bulls will begin the season at the Colgate Tournament where they will open the season against Seton Hall on Friday, Aug. 26 at 3:00 pm. The Bulls will then play Colgate that night and again on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
The following weekend, UB will head to the Indiana University Invitational where it will face Youngstown State on Friday, Sep. 2. On Saturday, the Bulls will face Southeast Missouri State in the morning and will then match up with Indiana on Saturday night at 7:30 pm.
The Bulls will remain on the road during the third weekend of play as they head to the St. John's Classic. On Friday, Sep. 9, the Bulls will face Brown and on Saturday they will face Northeastern in the morning and the host Red Storm on Saturday evening at 5:00 pm.
UB will have its home opener on Tuesday, Sep. 13 when it welcomes Niagara to Alumni Arena. The Bulls will remain home that weekend when they host the Blue & White Classic. The Bulls will face Syracuse on Friday, Sep. 16 at 7:00 pm. On Saturday, the Bulls will host Cornell at 10:00 am and then face Dayton on Saturday night at 7:30. The Bulls will close out non-conference play on Tuesday Sep, 27 at Canisius.
"We are very excited to be playing this schedule against some of the top teams in college volleyball," said Kress. "We will be challenged early on, but these matches will make us better when it comes time to play MAC opponents."
Buffalo's Mid-American Conference schedule will begin on Thursday, September 22 when they travel to Akron. UB opens its home conference schedule on Saturday, September 24 against Toledo. The 16-match conference slate will see the Bulls play each member of the East Division (Akron, Bowling Green, Kent State, Miami and Ohio) twice, both home and away, and each member of the West Division once (on the road against Ball State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan and at home against Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan). The Bulls end the regular season at Kent State on Sat., Nov. 12.
For the the first time, only the top eight teams in the conference will make the MAC Tournament, which has been moved to the SPIRE Sports Complex in Geneva, OH. The tournament will take place from November 18-20.
