Bulls Finish Weekend With Sweep Of Howard

MORGANTOWN, WV – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team finished its opening weekend of the season with a 3-0 victory over Howard on Sunday morning at the West Virginia Classic.  With the victory the Bulls finish the weekend 2-1.

The Bulls took the match 25-14, 25-12, 25-19, hitting .291 for the match, their highest total of the weekend.  UB played strong defense in the match as 11 total blocks helped account for Howard hit. 000 for the match.

UB started of the match with six straight points and never looked back as it has now won the first set in all three matches this season.  Howard was never closer than within five points during the opening set.  Howard took an early 3-1 lead in the second, but with the Bulls up by a narrow 11-10 mark, UB would finish the set out on a 14-2 run.  UB would also hold on in the third set despite some rallying from the Bisons.  Up 20-17 in the third set, the Bulls closed things out with a 5-2 run.

Freshman Dana Musil led the way with 11 kills, while senior Kristin Bignell continued to have a solid weekend, finishing with seven kill and zero errors on 12 swings.  Musil also had six service aces, just two off the school record for aces in a three-set match.  The six aces were the most in a match by a UB player since Lindsey Schlegel had six against Wright State during the 2008 season.  Freshman Christine Fritsche added five kills, while freshman Carissa McKenna and senior Kayla Govier each had four kills.

Freshman Kelly Svoboda finished the match with eight digs, while Fritsche added seven.  Schlegel had a match-high 21 assists, while freshman Dani Reinert chipped in 10 assists as well.

The Bulls return to Western New York this week as they head to Big Four rival Niagara on Wednesday night.  Match is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
