MORGANTOWN, WV – The University at Buffalo volleyball team got their 2010 season off on the right foot Saturday morning as the Bulls swept Youngstown State, 3-0, in the opening game of the WVU Mountaineer Classic.
Playing with six newcomers the Bulls got off to a slow start in the first set, but the sign of any good team is being able come back from those deficits. The Bulls trailed by as many as seven points in the opening set, being down 18-11, but six straight UB points put it back within 18-17. YSU would increase its lead once again going up 24-20 and sitting on match point, however the Bulls made sure that the Penguins never got there. UB scored six straight points to take the opening set, 26-24.
The Bulls continued their offensive attack in the second set, hitting .312 en route to a 25-20 victory in the set. The Bulls never trailed in the set, including leads of 15-7 and 18-12. A 21-15 lead for the Bulls forced YSU to use its second timeout of the set. The Bulls were able to close it out with back-to-back kills from freshman Christine Fritsche.
In the third set UB was able to overcome an early deficit to take the set 25-16. The Penguins scored the first four points of the set and six of the first eight points. The Bulls followed it up with six straight points, beginning a 15-3 run. UB led 17-9 and never looked back, ending the match on back-to-back kills from senior Kayla Govier.
The Bulls finished the match with four players picking up at least seven kills. Senior Kristin Bignell led the way with nine kills, while Fritsche and fellow freshman Dana Musil each picked up eight kills. Junior Abby Niekamp finished with seven kills and just two errors on 13 kills. Senior Kayla Govier recorded six kills as well for the Bulls. Senior Lindsey Schlegel and freshman Dani Reinert both saw action running the offense, finishing the opener with 21 assists and 15 assists, respectively.
UB is back in action tonight when it plays the host Mountaineers at 7:00 pm.
