Women’s Tennis Opens Season At Cornell Fall Invitational
ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began its 2012 Fall campaign on Friday as they faced student-athletes from Cornell and Albany during the first day of the Cornell Fall Invitational. The Bulls had mixed results on the afternoon as three newcomers saw action to go along with six returnees.
Junior Tanvi Shah received a bye in the opening round of the Flight "A" singles bracket as she was seeded first. Freshman Gopika Kapoor and juniors Marta Stoyanova and Miranda Podlas each dropped their opening matches, while senior Tamara Markovic defeated Elke Vromans from Albany, 6-2, 6-3 to move on to the second round. Kapoor, Stoyanova and Podlas each moved into the consolation bracket.
In the "B" Singles bracket, sophomore Shir Aharon picked up the win as she swept past Albany's Francine White, 6-0, 6-0. Laura Hernandez dropped her first contest, as did Alexandra Diamondi, but junior Anamarie Candanoza defeated Lauren Michaels from Cornell, 6-4, 6-2. Candanoza and Aharon each move on to the second round.
In double action, Shah and Podlas won their opener 8-2 over Michaels and Ordway from Cornell. Shah and Podlas are seeded second in the field. The Bulls advanced a pair of doubles teams in the "B" flight as Hernandez and Markovic defeated Iannone and Crummey from Albany, 8-4, while Candanoza and Aharon picked up a first round bye.
Action at Cornell continues tomorrow and through Sunday.
