ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team completed it's season opening weekend with two titles, as well as a couple of third place finishes.
In The "A" Singles Draw, sophomore transfer Tanvi Shah claimed third place as she overcame a loss in the semifinals to defeat Cornell's Sarah O'Neil in the third place match, 7-5, 6-1. Junior Kira Golenko and sophomore Marta Stoyanova were both in the "A" Singles back draw, but neither was able to move past the second round.
In the "B" Singles Draw, freshman Alexandra Diamandi and sophomore Miranda Podlas both dropped second round matches moving into the back draw. Both players were able to claim quarterfinal matches in the back draw as Podlas defeated Martina Tripcovici from NJIT, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 and Diamandi defeated Emma Leibowicz from Binghamton, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8. However, both players lost their matches in the back draw semifinals.
Junior Tamara Markovic had the most successful weekend on the singles side as she claimed the Flight "C" Singles Title. After heading into the second round, Markovic defeated Rosemary Li from Cornell, 6-1, 7-5 to move into the semifinals. There she met Kirsten Kohagen from Cornell, defeating her 6-4, 6-3, advancing to the finals. Markovic completed the sweep of Big Red players with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Courtney Malinchak to claim the championship.
In doubles action, Stoyanova and Podlas won the "A" Doubles back draw after Colgate's Kelsey Shea and Kelsey Wanhainen withdrew due to injury. Stoyanova and Podlas advanced to the finals after an 8-6 victory over Binghamton's Emma Leibowicz and Taylor Hollander.
In the "B" Doubles Flight, Markovic completed the outstanding weekend as she joined Golenko in taking third place in the flight. After falling in the semifinals to Sarah O'Neil and Rosemary Li of Cornell, Golenko and Markovic met Ksenia Kuzmenko and Hannelore MacDonald from NJIT in the third place match, winning 8-6.
The Bulls will be back in action the weekend of Oct. 8 when they head to the NYC Invitational.
