Bulls Post Solid Results In Day One Of Cornell Fall Classic
ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began its 2011 Fall campaign on Friday afternoon, competing at the Cornell Fall Classic. In addition to UB's returnees, the Bulls also got to see two newcomers compete for the first time.
In the "A" Singles Flight, sophomore transfer Tanvi Shah scored a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 win over Nina Mayevska of NJIT. Also competing in the "A" Flight were sophomore Marta Stoyanova, who lost a 6-1, 6-2 decision and junior Kira Golenko, who dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Sarah O'Neil of Cornell. Shah will face Gabby Sullivan from Cornell tomorrow, while Golenko and Stoyanova will both compete in the back draw.
In the "B" Singles Flight, sophomore Miranda Podlas scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Emma Leibowicz of Binghamton to move into the second round where she will face Nina Turudic of Cornell. Freshman Alexandra Diamandi received a first round bye and she will face Marina Bykovskaya from Binghamton in tomorrow's action.
Junior Tamara Markovic competed in the Flight "C" Singles bracket and moved on to the second round after her opponent withdrew. Markovic will play Cornell's Rosemary Li tomorrow.
In doubles action, Stoyanova and Podlas received a first-round bye before falling in the second round, 8-5. Newcomers Shah and Diamandi teamed up to scored an 8-5 win in the first round, but fell in the second round to Cornell's Young and Perelman, 8-4.
Golenko and Markovic teamed up in the "B" Doubles bracket and after receiving a first-round bye went on to defeat Rock and Silvers from Colgate, 8-2. Golenko and Markovic moved into the semifinals where they will face O'Neal and Li from Cornell.
Action will continue tomorrow from Ithaca, NY with the Invitational wrapping up on Sunday.
