UB Alums Continue To Find Success On The Courts

BUFFALO, NY – One of the most successful programs over the last 10 years, the UB women's tennis team is continuing to produce players that have kept up their tennis careers.  This past weekend two of those players were playing in the prestigious Sargent and Collins, LLP Women's $10,000 Championships, a USTA Pro Circuit event at the Miller Tennis Center.

The event features players ranked as high as 300 in the world and includes a national field.  Tournament director and Miller Tennis Center owner Todd Miller discussed the importance of bringing this event to Buffalo in an interview with WGRZ.  The interview can be found here.

Both Andreaa Novaceanu and Smaranda Stan competed in the event with Stan receiving a bye in the first round of the qualifying draw.  Novaceanu picked up a first round victory over Olivia Hsu, 6-2, 6-2.  Both players fell in the second round as Stan lost in three sets to Madeline Kobelt, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Novaceanu lost to Olivia Janowicz, 6-3, 6-1. Stan also played double with Kelly Callahan, but they lost in the qualifying semifinals, 6-2, 6-4.

Also going on this past weekend was the Can-Am Tournament in Fort Erie, which featured a doubles final of all UB graduates.  Winning the event was current assistant coach Kristen Ortman and Sheri Perdziak, who defeated Lisa Noworyta and Erica Weiss, 7-5, 6-2.  Ortman graduated from UB in 2006, while Perdziak, Noworyta and Weiss all finished their UB careers in 2004.
