MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began their fall season at the Gopher Invite this weekend and through two days of play, the Bulls have had several impressive performances in singles and doubles.
The Bulls have two players who are looking for a third-place finish tomorrow in their respective flights. Senior Denise Harijanto won her first two matches of the tournament as she defeated players from the Big Ten and the Big 12. Harijanto defeated Zuzana Chmelarova of Iowa, 6-2, 6-2 and then defeated Erin Karonis of Iowa State, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Harijanto dropped her first match of the tournament to Alessandra Ferazzi of Minnesota and will play for third place tomorrow against Madeline Geibert of Nebraska.
In doubles, the regionally-ranked duo of Harijanto and Diana Popescu lost their opening match in first doubles, but came back to defeat a duo from Minnesota as they are in the consolation finals tomorrow. Petrova and Markovic will also be fighting for a consolation crown at second doubles as they face a team from Iowa State. In third doubles, which is a round robin format, UB's crew of Anna Subenkova and Kira Golenko have won both of their matches and look to take the third doubles title tomorrow as they have one match left.
