PHILADELPHIA – The University at Buffalo rowing team is making a strong case to win the Jack and Nancy Seitz Trophy as women's points champion of the Dad Vail Regatta for the fourth time in the past five years after a strong first day of racing. All five UB entries that raced on Friday advanced to Saturday competition.
The varsity four boat of Kara Buchheit, Veronika Kwinecki, Hayley Franco, Kylie Lewis and Bethany Cross finished second in their race with a time of 7:52.4. Drexel won just four seconds ahead of the Bulls. They advanced to Saturday's semifinals.
Next, the varsity eight boat of Alison Sheehan, Rosa Kemp, Hannah Miller-Selzer, Jacklyn Postulka, Heide MacMahon-Manning, Kaitlyn Koscielniak, Shannon David, Sydney Gilchrist and Brittany Ronald finished second in their race with a time of 6:40.15. Miami won the race with a time of 6:33.2. They, too, advanced to tomorrow's semifinal.
The next boat to compete was the novice four and they advanced to the semifinals with a second-place time of 8:24.17. Colgate won the race with a time of 8:14.92. The novice four boat was made up of Kara Buchheit, Veronika Kwinecki, Hayley Franco, Kylie Lewis and Bethany Cross.
Consisting of Katie Boniello, Sara-Ann Fox, Alyssa Gabel, Melissa Ward, Jessica Levy, Alexa Shoiock, Nicole Ciesielski, Stephanie Iannacchino and Jordyn Phillips, the novice eight boat finished less than two seconds behind winner Bucknell to advance to Saturday's semifinal.
Finally, the second varsity eight boat of Emily Glasgow, Danielle Carlino, Sarah Gallagher, Deborah Garth, Rachel Cuthbert, Justine Bottorff, Francisca Strange-Sepulva, Brittany Davidson, and Elizabeth Murphy finished second in their race with a time of 7:08.3. Bucknell won the race with a time of 7:02.3.
UB's lightweight eight crew is already in the finals against four other boats for the Kamrad Trophy.
The Dad Vail Regatta concludes on Saturday.
