Bulls Place Second at CAA Championships
FAIRFAX STATION, VA – A young University at Buffalo rowing squad had a strong showing at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship with a second place finish. The Bulls, looking to defend the title they won a season ago, finished with 25 points. Northeastern won the crown with 36 points.
The Bulls finished third in the Varsity Eight race. The boat of Kate Evely, Rosa Kemp, Shannon David, Susannah Sage Green, Heide MacMahon-Manning, Brittany Davidson, Deborah Garth, Brittany Ronald and Ashley Hanhurst finished with a time of 6:38.0. Northeastern won the race with a time of 6:30.7
The Second Varsity Eight boat consisting of Alison Sheehan, Danielle Carlino, Kaitlyn Koscielniak, Hannah Miller-Selzer, Sydney Gilchrist, Sarah Gallagher, Sam Palma, Barbara Prescott and Kelsey Tretter finished second with a time of 6:46.9. Northeastern won the race with a time of 6:43.3
Head Coach Rudy Weiler was pleased with the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight boats performances.
"Our Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight performed the way we wanted them to," Weiler said. "We wanted them to win a medal and they did that."
The Varsity Four finished fourth in their race with a time of 7:46.1. Northeastern won the race with a time of 7:29.2. The Varsity Four boat was made up Kara Buchheit, Megan Bayley, Francisca Strange-Sepulveda, Elizabeth Murphy and Jacklyn Postulka
The second place overall finish was impressive considering the youth of Buffalo's lineups. The Bulls' Varsity Eight boat had three freshmen and three sophomores. The Second Varsity Eight boat had two freshmen and three sophomores. Two of the Varsity Four were sophomores.
The CAA named its All-Conference teams on Sunday and three Bulls were honored. Evely, Hanhurst and Ronald were all named to the first team.
The CAA Championship does not mark the end of the season as the Bulls have a very important race next week. The Varsity Eight will face off against Rhode Island with the winner advancing to the Eastern Sprints. A Buffalo squad has never participated in the Eastern Sprints.
