BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo rowing team hosted Eastern Michigan in its annual Harvey Cup races Saturday morning, not only racing the Eagles, but also the low temperatures and precipitation throughout the morning. UB was victorious, winning all five races, including the Harvey Cup in the Varsity Eight.
Saturday's race was highlighted by the Varsity Eight race, which is awarded the Harvey Cup, named after former UB administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away from cancer in September 2003. The Bulls won their fifth straight Harvey Cup as the team of coxswain Britt Marshall, Katie Garofalo, Cathleen Streicher, Tara Rudkoski, Sasha Bailey, Francisca Nwoke, Alana Sharpe, Brittany Ronald and Sam Masucci finished in 7:40.1 crossing the finish line in front of Eastern Michigan at 7:59.5.
UB won two races by over a minute, including the opening race in the Novice Eight. UB's boat of coxswain Kara Buchheit, Melissa James, Kylie Lewis, Lauren Benz, Deborah Garth, Bethany Cross, Samantha Barrett, Elizabeth Murphy and Katelynn Hentz finished in 8:16.39, while EMU finished in 9:37.24.
UB claimed victory at the Second Varsity Eight winning at 7:54.56, defeating EMU that finished at 8:32.74. In the Novice Four the Bulls defeated EMU, 9:26 to 9:39.
In lightweight action, the Bulls were in Boston as they finished third in their race with MIT and Simmons. UB clocked in at 7:19.28, behind MIT who won the race at 7:05.56.
The Bulls head to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships next Sunday in Sandy Run Park, Virginia.
