INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The University at Buffalo rowing team began the spring season at the Indiana Invitational on Sunday picking up a first-place finish in the Second Varsity Four and three second-place finishes against teams from Indiana, Notre Dame, Purdue and Eastern Michigan.

 

UB's Second Varsity Four team of coxswain Britt Marshall, Sarah Gallagher, Megan Bayley, Francisca Strange and Dakota Smithclocked in at 8:34.5 defeating second-place Notre Dame by seven seconds. UB's boat also finished 16 seconds better than Purdue and Indiana's boat by 32 seconds.

 

The Bulls had three second place finishes including their Second Varsity Eight boat, which consisted of coxswain Kate Evely, Kate Garofalo, Sasha Bailey, Lindsay DiCosimo, Alexandra Condon, Jacklyn Postulka, Francisca Nwoke, Sam Masucci and Kelsey Tretter. UB clocked in at 7:21.4, just seven-tenths of a second behind first-place Notre Dame. It was a two-boat race as third-place Indiana finished 11 seconds behind the Bulls.


UB's Varsity Four boat also picked up a second-place finish as it finished behind Notre Dame. The boat of coxswain Tarynn Weightman, Sydney Gilchrist, Shenita McLean, Rebecca Rayterand Rachel Cuthbert finished in 8:22.6, defeating Indiana by 11 seconds, Purdue by 28 seconds and Eastern Michigan by 51 seconds. 

 

UB's Novice Four boat finished in second in between two boats from Notre Dame, clocking in at 9:07.9. UB's boat of coxswain Suvita Visqanathan, Megan Klyczek, Ariana Blake, Samantha Shojaie andKolina Dacko finished just seven seconds behind Notre Dame's B boat. UB did beat Notre Dame's top boat, as well as a boat from Purude, by more than a minute.

 

The Bulls had two more boats at the event as their Novice Eight boat finished in third at 8:07.2, just two seconds behind second-place Indiana. UB's Varsity Eight boat finished fourth in one of the tightest races of the day, clocking in at 7:16.0. Notre Dame won the race at 7:06.0 and Indiana finished second at 7:07.6. The Bulls did defeat Eastern Michigan, who they will host later this season, by nearly 30 seconds.


The Bulls return to action next weekend as they head to Ithaca, NY where they will race against Syracuse, Michigan State, Cornell, Yale and Gonzaga.
