Bulls Fall to Binghamton, 27-12

LANCASTER, NY - In front of a boisterous crowd at Lancaster High School, the Buffalo wrestling team battled regional rival Binghamton Monday afternoon. The Bulls won four matches but gave up nine bonus points to fall 27-12. The loss moves UB to 2-8 while the 23rd-ranked Bearcats improve to 8-0.

Freshman Jake Waste led off with a 10-5 win over Caleb Wallace, but Binghamton reeled off three straight wins to build a 13-3 lead before Sean Walton won his 125-pound match 11-7. Filling in for Max Soria, who had to remain home for a family matter, Walton was dynamic and just missed a chance at back points to extend his winning margin.

Kevin Smith then won his bout at 141, controlling a passive Joe Bonaldi throughout in a 5-1 win. Smith has now won seven straight dual matches and 11 of his last 12 matches overall. To cap the afternoon off, Mark Lewandowski took to the mat in his home gym, having wrestled at Lancaster High School throughout his four years there. Battling Matt Kaylor, who came in ranked ahead of him in most national publications, Lewandowski earned a tough 3-2 win.

The team will now travel down to Pennsylvania for a weekend dual against rival Edinboro. The two teams split last season, with the Bulls losing at the Virginia Duals before beating the Scots at Alumni Arena, 18-16. The dual is set for 1 pm.
