A veteran of over 27 years of NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaching, Pat Charity begins her second season as assistant coach and her first as recruiting coordinator.

Last season, Charity helped with both forward and guards positions and breaking down opponent film as she helped the Bulls finish 16-16 and make it to the Women’s Basketball Invitational, UB’s first ever postseason appearance.  She also helped Kourtney Brown, who became UB’s all-time leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker.  Brown was named the MAC Player of the Year and became just the second player in school history to garner All-American honors.

During her career in women’s basketball, Charity has worked as an assistant coach, associate head coach and head coach at several Division I programs in such conferences as the SEC, Pac 10, WAC, Big West, Mountain West and the MAC. Charity also has worked with the WNBA and has helped her teams reach three NCAA Tournaments.

Charity arrived at Buffalo following one season at Call State-Northridge where she worked following a five-year stint at the University of Hawai’i. With the Rainbow Wahine, she prepared and executed game strategies, prepared scouting reports and served as an interim head coach on two occasions.

Prior to her work at Hawai’i, Charity’s career included stops at Long Beach State (2002-03), UNLV (2001-02, NCAA Tournament appearance), Alabama (1997-2000, Two NCAA Tournament appearances) and Arizona (1987-90). She also worked in two separate stints with her alma mater and fellow MAC member, Western Michigan. From 1982-1987, she worked as an assistant coach with Broncos, and from 1990-97 was the head coach in Kalamazoo.

A standout player at Western Michigan, Charity was an honorable mention All-American in 1978 and ‘80 and also a member of the U.S. silver medal-winning team at the 1977 World Games. She also played in the initial Women’s All- American Classic in Philadelphia in 1977 and was one of 15 candidates for the Wade Trophy, honoring the nation’s top collegiate player. Charity is the only player in school history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. In 1993, Charity was inducted into WMU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Charity graduated with a B.S. in education with a minor in recreation and coaching from Western Michigan in 1981 and received her M.S. in administration in 1990 from Western Michigan.
