Morrell Earns Spot in 50-yard Freestyle Finals
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Senior Mallory Morrell became the first University at Buffalo women's swimmer to reach the evening session of the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships as she has qualified for the consolation race of the 50-yard freestyle. She will race in the consolation final on Thursday evening at the IU Natatorium.
Morrell turned in a preliminary heat time of 22.39 seconds to qualify 16th overall and make the consolation race field. The top 16 swimmers in each event race in the finals each evening with the top eight in the championship race and the next eight in the consolation race.
"It's a great achievement for her," said head coach Andy Bashor.
Morrell won the Mid-American Conference title in the 50-yard freestyle at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium on February 28. She set the MAC and UB records of 22.24 seconds in the preliminary round.
Brittney Kuras was also in action for the Bulls on Thursday. She finished 53rd among 63 entrants in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.04.
