Swimmers Fall to Spartans, Split With MAC Rivals
The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Ohio for weekend meets. In Bowling Green, the UB women split their meets, downing the host Falcons, 149-145, while falling to Michigan State, 158-142. UB's men fell to the Big 10 Spartans, 161-139. On Sunday, the Bulls traveled to Oxford to tangle with Miami (OH). The UB men knocked off the host RedHawks, 175-124, while the UB women fell 177-120.
Kuras Sweeps Her Individual Races
Women's senior Brittney Kuras won all six of her individual races in UB's meets over the weekend. Against Bowling Green and Michigan State, Kuras started the day with a win in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.95. Later she claimed the 100-yard freestyle in 50.93. Finally, she added a victory in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.84. At Miami, she lowered all three times. Kuras took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.24 and then followed with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.60. She later won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.19.
Powers Goes the Distance
Jessica Powers swept the distance freestyle races for the UB women in both weekend meets. At Bowling Green, she posted a season-best time of 10:14.69 to win the 1,000-yard freestyle, lowering her previous top mark by three seconds. The Bulls took the top three spots in the event as Paula Stoddard (10:27.72) and Emma Miller (10:27.98) also set season-best times to finish second and third, respectively. Powers also took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.60, holding off the second-place finisher by .17 seconds. She also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.75. In the win over Miami, Powers won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:11.74 and later won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.44.
Schwippert Strong in the Backstroke
Matt Schwippert was a double winner as he swept both backstroke races in UB's win over Miami. Schwippert won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.34 and later came back for a victory in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.60. Against Michigan State, he finished second in both races behind Spartan All-American Jacob Jarzen. Schwippert swam the backstroke portion of UB's victorious 200-yard medley relay against Michigan State. The foursome of Schwippert, Josh Meints, Cory Zorsch and Mike Dugan won the race in 1:31.91.
Eastern Michigan Showdown is Saturday
Both squads host Eastern Michigan in a MAC showdown on Saturday, January 26 at 1:00 pm at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Eastern Michigan men enter the meet with a 3-2 overall record and 1-0 MAC record, as they defeated Ball State, 159-130, on last Saturday, extending their MAC dual meet winning streak to 61 matches. Meanwhile, the EMU women are 6-0 overall and have won all four of their MAC meets (Ohio, Toledo, Bowling Green, Ball State).
