BUFFALO, NY – After a five-week layoff from competition, the University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action on Saturday scoring victories over local rival Niagara at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The UB men (2-1) defeated the Purple Eagles, 147-80, while the women's squad remained undefeated at 4-0 with a 139-96 decision.
The Bulls juggled their lineups to give several swimmers the chance to compete in events outside of their usual races. Brittney Kuras won a pair of events for the UB women on Saturday. Kuras took the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:28.47. She later came back to claim to the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.42.
Other women's individual winners included Emma Miller in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.99), Karly Moore in the 50-yard freestyle (24.90), Marissa Murphy in the 100-yard butterfly (season-best 57.77), Becky Evangelista in the 100-yard freestyle (54.29), Ava Giachino in one-meter diving (270.90) and Rachel Eckert in three-meter diving (season-best 305.48). The 200-yard medley relay team of Murphy, Spencer Rodriguez, Taylor Lansing and Rachael Ragen also claimed a victory in 1:50.84.
Shawn Hoffman swept the men's diving competitions. Hoffman won the one-meter springboard event with 291.58 points. He posted a season-best 352.58 for his six-dive program to win the three-meter springboard event.
Winning individual events for the UB men were Antonio Lanzi in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:57.80), Cory Zorsch in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.31), Tommy Steele in the 50-yard freestyle (22.00), Mike Dugan in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.78), Josh Meints in the 100-yard butterfly (52.83), Christian Muller in the 100-yard freestyle (48.43) and Matt Hogan in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.16). Dugan and Meints joined Eric Culver and Ryan Smrekar in taking the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.99.
"I'm pleased with the way we competed today. It has been five weeks since we competed." said UB head coach Andy Bashor. "We're definitely tired from the training but we're getting good with where we are. From here on out, we need to get better. We need to get more speed."
The Bulls travel next weekend for a meets on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. UB travels to Bowling Green on Saturday, January 19 for a tri-meet that will feature visiting Michigan State as well as the host Falcons. On Sunday, January 20, the Bulls face MAC rival Miami (OH) in Oxford, Ohio.
