Mallory Morrell Wins MAC Women’s Swimmer of Week Award

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo senior Mallory Morrell has been named the Mid-American Conference's Women's Swimmer of the Week Award. The league announced its weekly awards from its Cleveland headquarters this morning.

Morrell was instrumental in UB's two road victories at Colgate and Army last weekend. In the Colgate meet, won by the Bulls, 132-110, Morrell broke the Colgate pool record in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.73. The previous mark of 23.87 was set in 2001 by Army's Heidi Borden. Morrell also combined with Jessica Powers, Alex Swies and Paula Stoddard to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:52.90. At Army the following day, Morrell swept the sprint freestyle races in UB's 168-127 decision over the Black Knights. She won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.75 and took the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 52.56.

"I am very proud of Mallory being selected as MAC Swimmer of the Week," said head coach Andy Bashor. "She definitely deserves it. She has been working very hard since last season and it is showing early in this season."

With their two victories last weekend, the Bulls improved to 3-0 in dual meets and have won the last nine duals dating to November 12, 2011.

Morrell is the third Bull to win the MAC's weekly swim award this season. Brittney Kuras won the award last week and men's swimmer Eric Culver earned the recognition last month.

The UB swimmers return to the water on November 30 for the three-day Zippy Invite at the University of Akron. UB's divers are at the Arizona Wildcat Diving Invite this weekend.
