Women Sweep Colgate, Army; Men Split Weekend Meets
The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Colgate and Army for weekend meets. On Friday, both squads scored victories over Colgate as the UB men defeated the Raiders, 144-74, while the women scored 132-110 victory and established four Colgate pool records. At West Point, the women's team remained undefeated at 3-0 with a 168-127 win over the Black Knights. However, the men's team was knocked off, 164.5-135.5.
Pool Records Established at Colgate
The Bulls set four facility records in their victory at Colgate's Lineberry Natatorium. Brittney Kuras scored a pair of freestyle victories, setting pool records in both races. Kuras won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.89, 2.3 seconds faster than the old mark set in 2009. Kuras later took the 100-yard freestyle in 51.15, shattering the oldest individual pool record set by Bucknell's Margaret Grunow of 51.23 in 1993. Also scoring two victories was Jessica Powers in the distance freestyle races. Powers set the Colgate pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:58.32 clocking, lowering the old mark of 5:00.87 set in 2010. Powers also won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:26.13. Mallory Morrell broke the Colgate pool record in the 50-yard freestyle. Morrell won the race in 23.73, breaking the record of 23.87 set by Heidi Borden of Army in 2001. Morrell and Powers were also part of UB's victorious 400-yard freestyle relay as they combined with Alex Swies and Paula Stoddard for a win in 3:32.90. The Lineberry facility was built in 1974. At Army, Morrell won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.75 and the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 52.56.
Patrum Scores Double at Colgate Meet
In the men's meet at Colgate, freshman Billy Patrum took a pair of events to lead the Bulls. Patrum claimed the 400-yard individual medley in 4:11.00, the fastest time for the Bulls this season. He later won the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best 1:56.60. UB also swept the men's diving events. Shawn Hoffman won the one-meter competition with 296.55 points and Chris Iafrati won the three-meter event at 301.60.
Schwippert Sweeps Backstrokes, Adds Relay Win at Army
Matt Schwippert led the Bulls' efforts at Army on Saturday. He swept the backstroke races, posting season-best times in both events. Schwippert won the 100-yard race in 50.85 and the 200-yard race in 1:51.71. He also swam the backstroke portion of UB's victorious 400-yard medley relay, followed by Josh Meints, Cory Zorsch and Mike Dugan as the Bulls finished in a season-best 3:22.70.
