Bulls Sweep Niagara, Binghamton in Return From Break
The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action after a six week break to down Niagara and Binghamton in a pair of meets away from home. The UB men (4-0) scored a 124-100 win over the Purple Eagles and defeated the Bearcats, 130-110. The UB women (4-2) knocked off Niagara by a 126-93 margin and then took care of Binghamton, 155-85.
McAllister Wins Three Freestyle Races Over Weekend
In UB's win over Niagara, freshman Colin McAllister won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.95 as he swam the event for the first time this season. He also finished second behind teammate Matt Schwippert in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.61. Against Binghamton the following day, McAllister swept both distance freestyle races, his regular events, as he sliced more than a second off his 1,000-yard freestyle time to win the race in 9:46.17. He later won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.85.
Kuras Wins Pair at Binghamton
In the meet at Binghamton, Brittney Kuras took a pair of races to lead the Bulls past the Bearcats. Kuras won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.16 and then followed with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.59. It was the first time this season that Kuras had competed in the 500-yard race. Against Niagara on Friday, Kuras finished second behind teammate Marrisa Murphy in the 100 backstroke (1:01.39) in her first time entered in the event this season and was part of UB's top entry in the 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:41.53.
Divers Post Season Bests
Against Niagara, Ava Giachino posted a season-best mark of 274.79 to win the women's one-meter diving event while Colin Patrican won the men's three-meter diving competition at 339.67. UB exhibitioned the second diving event against the Purple Eagles but Chris Iafrati (296.92) and Rachel Eckert (314.03) posted season-bests. On Saturday in Binghamton, the Bulls claimed both women's competitions with Giachino winning the one-meter event with 263.03 points and Eckert taking the three-meter event with 260.70 points and Patrican won from the men's one-meter board at 319.05.
One Last Home Hurrah
The Bulls return home to Alumni Arena Natatorium for the final time in the regular season this weekend. The women will host Bowling Green while the men will entertain Miami (OH) in Mid-American Conference matchups beginning at 2:00 pm. The meets will serve as the final home appearances for senior men Chris Berloth, Colin Patrican and Curtis Williams. Keri Chandler, Brynn Marecki, and Alie Schirmers will be marking their final home meet for the UB women.
