Bulls, Eagles Split MAC Swim Meets
YPSILANTI, MI – The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams split Saturday's Mid-American Conference meets at Eastern Michigan. The women scored a 161-137 win over the Eagles while the men suffered their first defeat of the season with a 164-136 loss.
In the women's meet, UB (4-2, 1-1 MAC) won eight events with Caroline Simmons winning two individual races and anchoring both winning relays. Simmons won the sprint freestyle races on Saturday. She took the 50-yard freestyle in 23.59 and then followed to win the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 51.85.
Kayla Pratt-Collins also posted a season-best time in her win in the 200-yard backstroke as she touched first in 2:05.95. Brynn Marecki took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.59 with Alie Schirmers scoring a win in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:21.61.Marissa Murphy won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.67.
The Bulls swept the women's relay races. Pratt-Collins, Marecki, Jessie Koltz and Simmons took the opening race of the meet with a 1:46.33 clocking in the 200-yard medley relay. The Bulls finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the foursome of Karly Moore, Koltz, Jordan Deren and Simmons took first in 3:31.70.
Matt Hogan won two individual events for the UB men (5-1, 1-1 MAC), setting season-bests in both wins. In the 200-yard freestyle, he finished in 1:40.94 and came back later to take the 100-yard freestyle in 45.66.
Eric Culver won the men's 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:38.83 and Colin Patrican won the one-meter diving competition with a six-dive total of 338.70 points.
UB also swept the men's relay races, setting season-bests in both races. Phil Aronica, Hogan, Matt Schwippert and Jared Heine won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:31.20. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Aronica, Mike Dugan, Heine and Hogan posted a season-best 3:03.79.
The UB women host Akron and Ball State next weekend while the men are off until February 4 when they travel to Penn State.
