Bulls Blast Binghamton in Home Waters
The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams rolled to easy victories on Saturday afternoon over Binghamton at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The UB men defeated the Bearcats, 145-87, to remain undefeated in dual meets while the women took a 138-96 decision from the Bearcats.
Patrican Breaks Diving Record
In the men's meet, Colin Patrican broke the men's one-meter diving record with a six-dive total of 346.42. The total eclipsed Mike McDowell's performance of 344.79. Patrican also scored 362.48 points on the three-meter board as an exhibition entrant. Ava Giachino won the women's one-meter diving with a total of 290.47 for her six-dive program. The total earned Giachino a spot in March's zone diving championships. She also was the highest women's scorer on the three-meter board with 241.42 points as an exhibition entrant.
Hogan, Murphy Earn Doubles
Scoring double wins for the Bulls were Matt Hogan and Marissa Murphy. Hogan took the men's 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.58 and then won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.03. Murphy swept the women's sprint freestyle races as she won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.24 and the 100-yard freestyle in 52.73. Murphy was also part of UB's top finishing 200-yard freestyle relay squad with Caroline Simmons, Jessie Koltz and Jordan Deren, as the foursome finished in 1:37.48 exhibitioning the race.
Freestylers, Relayers Roll to Victories
In the distance freestyle races, the Bulls rolled to wins. Deren won the women's 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.95 with Simon Proudfoot taking the men's race in 1:43.54. Emma Miller won the women's 500-yard freestyle in 5:10.26 as Andrew Tanzey was victorious in the men's race in 4:43.79. In the 1,650-yard freestyle Tracy Vogel won the women's competition in 17:40.23 while Eric Culver won the men's race in 16:18.24. Jared Heine won the men's 50-yard freestyle in 21.47. Both teams also won the 400-yard medley relays. Karly Moore, Alie Schirmers, Jessie Koltz and Caroline Simmons combined for the women in 3:58.53. Phil Aronica, Josh Meints, Cory Zorsch and Heine were victorious for the men in 3:25.39.
Andy's Assessment
Head coach Andy Bashor remarked following the Binghamton meet, "I am very pleased with the way we competed in the pool and on the boards today. We have been training very well over the past three weeks and it showed today. We had many that swam in season bests and congratulations to Ava [Giachino] for qualifying for NCAA Zones and Colin [Patrican] for breaking the school record on the one-meter board. We have a big weekend against EMU. We are excited about the opportunity to go up against the best in the conference."
