Women’s Swimming and Diving Falls at Miami In MAC Opener

OXFORD, OH –The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team opened the MAC portion of its season this afternoon as they took on Miami in Oxford, Ohio. FreshmanCaroline Simmons, junior Jordan Deren and senior diver Meili Carpenter each won a pair of events for the Bulls, as they fell to defending MAC Champions, 171-129.


The meet opened in dramatic fashion with the Bulls missing out on a first-place relay finish by just 20 tenths of second, as the 200 medley relay team of Jessica BallardBrynn MareckiJessie Koltz and Simmons finished second in a time of 1:45.30, just behind Miami's "A" relay that finished in 1:45.10. Deren won the next event for the Bulls, winning the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:26.09, more than seven second ahead of the RedHawk competition. Deren also took a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.54.

Simmons swept the sprint events, taking the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.97 and the 100 freestyle in 52.40. Carpenter earned impressive scores on the boards, taking first on the one-meter with a score of 314.03, and first on the three-meter with 270.08 points. The final 400 freestyle relay team of Deren,Sam Palma, Koltz and Simmons also finished picked up a win for Buffalo finishing in a time of 3:30.83, but it was not enough as the Bulls dropped their first MAC meet of the season.

 

The Bulls will finish their weekend road trip with a dual meet against the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday afternoon. The meet is set for 1pm at Ohio's Aquatic Center.
