ORLANDO, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the UCF Holiday Inn Select Tournament, falling in the opener to Stetson and then South Carolina in the nightcap.
The Bulls dropped the opener this afternoon to Stetson, 5-1, as Buffalo struggled offensively through out the contest. Stetson scored two runs in the top of the first off Buffalo starter Dani Cowan, but neither of those was earned.
UB answered with one in the top of the second as freshman Anissa Pinedo led off the inning with a walk and was replaced on the bases by freshman Kenzie Koch. Koch advanced to second on a ground out and came in to score on a double to right field from senior Andi Saucier.
The Hatters added another run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bulls recorded five hits, coming off the bats of just two players in the game. Junior Sammi Gallardo went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, while Saucier went 2-for-3 with the RBI double. Cowan went 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters. Fellow freshman Nicole Aviles entered the game to pick up the final out in the bottom of the sixth.
In the second game of the day against South Carolina, the Bulls were held out of the hit column until the fifth inning, when freshman Ryleigh Fitzgerald finally came through with a base hit. In the field, junior Tori Speckman was able to pitch UB out of trouble early, but the Gamecocks answered with three in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Bulls tried their entire pitching staff in the game, but were unable to find any success and allowed three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to lose 8-0. In addition to Fitzgerald's single, the only other Bull to reach base was Tori Pettine on a hit by pitch.
Due to low morning temperatures in the area, all games tomorrow will be pushed back two hours. The Bulls will face Central Florida at 1:00 pm to conclude the weekend.
