Long Ball Leads Bulls To Victory
WASHINGTON, DC – The University at Buffalo softball team used a three-run home run from junior Alyssa Ward as the Bulls went on to defeat Robert Morris, 3-0, in the final game of the Colonial Classic. The win was UB's third straight.
Buffalo senior Holly Johnson started the game and pitched into the third inning. UB sophomore Tori Pettine led the bottom half of the inning off by reaching base on an infield error and then fellow sophomore Holly Luciano moved her to third on a double. That sent Ward to plate as she hit her first home run of the season and the fifth of her career. The three runs would be all the Bulls would need.
Speckman continued her strong pitching in the circle, pitching out of trouble in the top of the seventh. Robert Morris put the first two runners on base, but Speckman struck out the next two batters and got the final out on a fly out to left field to end the game.
Speckman picked up her fourth win of the year as she struck out six batters in 5.0 innings. Johnson added two strikeouts and one hit in her two innings, but walked four. The Bulls had four different players with hits, including one hit a piece from sophomore Sammi Gallardo and freshman Karly Nevez.
"For the weekend, I thought we did a great job staying true to the process and getting better every game," said head coach Jen Teague. "Our pitchers limited their walks and obviously hitting four home runs really helped our confidence at the plate and it was nice to see it come from four different players. We look forward to our off day tomorrow and then continuing the process as we prepare for our trip to Texas for Spring Break."
The Bulls will return to action with a doubleheader at Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon.
