JACKSONVILLE, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team concluded its opening weekend on Sunday morning, falling to St. Louis, 8-1. Overall, the Bulls picked up two victories over the first weekend, seeing bright spots both offensively and in the pitching circle.
St. Louis got on the board in the bottom of the second, putting up two against Buffalo starter Holly Johnson. The Bulls responded for one in the top of the fourth as junior Caitlin Dekker drove in her sixth run batted in of the weekend, scoring freshman Alexis Curtiss.
However, St. Louis responded with five in the bottom of the fourth and added one in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson picked up the loss as she allowed seven runs in 3.0 innings of work. Haylee Land came in to pitch the final 3.0 innings and allowed two hits and just one unearned run. Holly Luciano and Sammi Gallardo joined Dekker in recording hits in the game.
The Bulls will return to action next weekend when they head to Athens, GA for the 9th Annual Georgia Softball Classic. They begin play Friday afternoon against Winthrop at 1:00 pm.
