MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games to Ball State on Saturday afternoon, falling in the opener7-4 and then losing 9-1 in the second game.
The Cardinals scored the first three runs of the game in the opener before the Bulls added a pair in the top of the third. With one out, senior Lindsay Hampton doubled down the left field line. Holly Luciano followed up with a single and after a UB out, both runs were driven in on a double by junior Kristin Waldron.
The Bulls briefly took a lead in the top of the fifth inning as Waldron drove in another two runs with a long home run to center field. However the Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth for the 7-4 win.
Holly Johnson picked up the loss as she allowed four runs in 4.2 innings pitched. The Bulls outhit Ball State in the opener, 12-9, including three hits from sophomore Ashley Bertot. Waldron, Luciano, Hampton and Jessica Griffin each had two-hit affairs.
The Cardinals continued their hot bats in the second game as they took a 9-1 decision in five innings. Ball State scored six runs over the first three innings, before the Bulls put up a run in the top of the fourth. Griffin grounded out, scoring Bertot from third for the UB run. The Cardinals added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Johnson pitched just a third of an inning in the second game as she allowed four runs and picked up the loss. Haylee Land and Kate Kraus both saw action in the circle as well. UB had just three hits, including a 2-for-2 performance from Bertot.
The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to St. Bonaventure for a game beginning at 4:00 pm.
