Bulls Drop Wild 11-Inning Affair To Quinnipiac, 7-6
CLEARWATER, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team concluded play at the USF – The Game Tournament on Sunday morning with a tough 7-6 loss to Quinnipiac in 11 innings. The Bulls led 4-2 going into the seventh, but were unable to hold on to the lead.
The Bulls loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, scoring their first run on a walk by Holly Luciano, scoring Alexandra Bejarano. The Bulls scored a second run in the inning as Alyssa Ward scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats picked up a run in the bottom of the second before Buffalo picked up another two runs in the top of third. Bejarano led off the third with a home run and then with two outs Andi Saucier singled to left center, scoring Ward.
Quinnipiac picked up another run in the bottom of the third, but Buffalo continued to lead 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Bobcats then scored two runs to send the game into extra innings. Neither team scored in the first two extra innings, but the offense began to pick up in the 10th.
With one out in the 10th, Bejarano singled down the left field line, scoring Waldron. The Bobcats tied it up in the bottom of the 10th with a one-out double, sending the game into the 11th. Ward was placed on second to start the inning and scored on a bunt single from Kelli Gleiser. UB led 6-5 going into the bottom of the 11th, but Quinnipiac was able to score two runs on a triple to right field for the victory.
Junior Holly Johnson pitched all 10.1 innings, striking out 10 batters in the game despite picking up the loss. Bejarano ended 3-for-5 in the game with two runs batted in. Gleiser also had multiple hits in the contest with two.
The Bulls are back in action on Thursday as they head to Penn State for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 4:00 pm. The games will be the first ever at the new Nittany Lion Softball Park.
