Bulls Sweep Niagara, Duquesne at Home

Playing at home for the first time this season, the University at Buffalo men's tennis team scored a pair of victories at the Miller Tennis Center with a 6-1 win over Niagara and a 5-1 decision against Duquesne. The Bulls are now 5-2 and have won three straight.

Alvarez Scores Tiebreaker Wins Against Purple Eagles

In the Niagara match, freshman Pablo Alvarez used a pair of tiebreakers to defeat Michael Elortegui, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6), in the number four. Alvarez trailed in the 6-3 in the second set tiebreaker before rattling off five straight points to win the match. Alvarez dropped a first-set tiebreaker to Duquesne's Alex Aleman in a straight sets loss on Saturday.

Hove Goes Three Sets Against Duquesne

In the Duquesne match on Saturday, Vusa Hove, playing first singles, gave the Bulls the clinching fourth point but it wasn't easy for the senior. After dropping the opening set, 6-0, to Rich Robbie, Hove rallied in the second set for a 6-3 win to force a deciding third set. The third set remained on serve until the 11th game when Hove broke serve to take a 6-5 lead and was serving for the match. However, Robbie rallied in the 12th game to force the 6-6 tiebreaker. Hove won the opening two points of the deciding breaker, but dropped the next three to trail 3-2. Hove then claimed the next five points in the tiebreaker for a 7-3 margin and winning the set, 7-6.

Bulls Clinch Doubles Point Against Niagara

In Friday's win over Niagara, UB took the opening doubles point with wins in the number one and two matches. At number one, the combo of Damien David and Akhil Mehta improved to 5-1 with their 8-4 victory over David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Counsol. The number two team of Vusa Hove and Sebastian Ionescu clinched the point with their 8-3 win over Brandon Gallegos and Lorenz Schwojer. Niagara won the number three doubles match as Mathieu Lacasse and Michael Elortegui defeated Sergio Arevalillo and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik, 8-4, as the UB tandem was paired for the first time this season. UB did not play doubles on Saturday against Duquesne due to court time.

Travel for Saturday, Host for Sunday

This week's schedule sees the Bulls travel to Princeton on Saturday, March 2 for their third meeting this season against an Ivy League member. UB then returns to the Miller Tennis Center for a Sunday, March 3 matchup against NJIT at 1 pm. The matchup with NJIT will be played in conjunction with the women's match against the Highlanders as both the men's and women's teams will be in action simultaneously.
