NEW HAVEN, CT – Play began on Friday for the University at Buffalo's three-man contingent at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at Yale University with sophomore Ivan Vereshchaga winning his opening singles match and combining with sophomore Damien David to advance in doubles play.
Vereshchaga scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Niagara's Michael Elortegui in the opening round of singles play to set up a second-round match with Brown's Sam Fife, who earned a first-round bye.
Earlier in the day, Vereshchaga teamed with David to dispatch of the Boston College tandem of Michael McGinnis and Jonathan Raude, 8-4. The UB pair will face Binghamton's Bastian Bornkessel and Ismael Dinia in Saturday's second round as the Binghamton tandem knocked off a pair from Harvard in the first round.
David and Vusa Hove received first-round byes and will open singles play on Saturday. Hove is coming off a 4-0 performance in winning a flight title at the Cornell Fall Invitational last weekend.
'We had a good day today and I am happy with the way we performed," stated head coach Lee Nickell. "Tomorrow is a true test for all the guys with the possibility of two singles matches on top of doubles in the morning, so we need to be prepared for a long day."
