Men's Tennis Downs Army, 5-2

GREENVILLE, SC – The University at Buffalo's men's tennis team scored a 5-2 win over Army on Wednesday as the Bulls won their second of three matches during their spring break trip to South Carolina. The Bulls improved to 5-3 overall while dropping the Black Knights to 6-8 overall and snapping a five-match win streak.

UB started slow as Army scored two doubles wins to capture the opening point. The lone win for the Bulls was at first doubles as Wojciech Starakiewicz and Mitch Zenaty downed Tripp Johnson and Donald Van Velzer, 8-4.

The Bulls won the match by winning five of the six singles contests, dropping only the number one match. Vusa Hove, at number two, Marcelo Mazzetto, at number three, and Jason Simon, at number four, all had easy victories in their contests, holding their opponents to no more than one game in either set. Alex Kalinin, at number five, picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dan Shaffer while Travis Zappia rallied for a super-tiebreaker win over Joshua Cook in the number six match.

"I am very happy with the way we have turned things around after a loss to Cornell. What I am most proud of is the way we are competing," said head coach Lee Nickell. "The matches against Furman and Army were great collegiate tennis matches with all players competing with class. We now look forward to playing a good College of Charleston team on Friday before coming home to Buffalo."

The Bulls will face the Cougars in Charleston at 2:00 pm on Friday.
