Netters Slip at Cornell
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to 46th ranked Cornell on Saturday in their lone contest for the week. The Bulls are 3-3 for the season as they head south for their spring break matches.
Starakiewicz and Zenaty Team For Doubles Win
Against the Big Red, the Bulls scored a win in the number one doubles match. UB's top duo of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Mitch Zenaty knocked off Cornell's Evan Bernstein and Jonathan Jaklitsch by an 8-5 margin. Starakiewicz and Zenaty are now 2-1 as a doubles tandem this season. The victory was also Zenaty's 10th doubles triumph of the year.
Pair of Three Setters in Singles
Although Cornell swept the singles matches from the Bulls, UB did force a pair of matches into third sets. In the number one match, Starakiewicz and Andy Gauthier split 7-6 tiebreakers before Starakiewicz fell in the super tiebreaker, In the number two match, Vusa Hove and Jaklitsch split 6-2 decisions in the first two sets. Jaklitsch won the third set by a 6-3 count.
Adjusting the Calendar
Some adjustments and additions to the team schedule for the remainder of the season have been made. Following the postponement of the Mid-American Conference match against Chicago State, the Bulls will host the Cougars on Sunday, April 10 at 10:30 am. Matches with St. Bonaventure and Niagara have been added for April 12 and 14, respectively, with both contests away from home. The Bulls will also host Marist on Sunday, April 3 at 10:00 am.
Headed South
The Bulls now head to South Carolina for three spring break matches. UB opens at Furman on Tuesday. The Paladins are 2-11 on the season, however six of their losses are to nationally-ranked programs. UB head coach Lee Nickell played for Furman for four seasons (1998-2002) earning All-Southern Conference honors three times. The Bulls also face Army and the College of Charleston on the trip.
