Bulls Lose Heartbreaker at Cornell, 4-3
ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Cornell on Saturday afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center. The Bulls (2-2) scored three singles wins but a third-set tiebreaker in Cornell's favor tipped the match to the Big Red (4-2).
The Bulls scored three singles wins after relinquishing the opening doubles point to the Big Red. At first singles, UB's Wojciech Starakiewicz scored a straight-sets win over Jonathan Jaklistch, 6-4, 7-6. UB also picked up a pair of singles wins at the bottom of the ladder from number five George Tibil and number six Vusa Hove. Tibil went three sets in downing Evan Bernstein in the number five match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Hove, playing in first collegiate match after joining the Bulls in January, rolled past Jared Karson at number six with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The match was decided in the number three contest as UB's Kirill Kolomyts and Cornell's Jeremy Feldman split the opening two sets and tied the third set, 6-6, to force a tiebreaker. Kolomyts trailed the tiebreaker early, fighting off several match points and had a couple of match points of his own before Feldman took the contest for Cornell.
Starakiewicz and Kolomyts scored UB's lone doubles win at number one with an 8-4 victory over Andy Gauthier and Feldman. Cornell took the doubles point after posting 8-6 wins in the number two and three matches.
The Bulls open their home schedule on Friday, February 26 against Niagara at the Miller Tennis Center starting at 5:00 pm.
