Kolomyts Named MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo senior Kirill Kolomyts has been selected as the Mid-American Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week following his play to help the Bulls capture the league's regular season title. The award was announced by the league office late Wednesday afternoon.

Kolomyts went 3-1 in his weekend matches at Ball State and Cleveland State as the Bulls finished the regular season with a 5-0 league record. Playing third singles, Kolomyts defeated Ball State's Andres Monroy and Cleveland State's Ryan Hamning in straight sets. The senior is 16-13 in singles play.

In a doubles win over Ball State last Saturday, Kolomyts teamed with Marcelo Mazzetto to win his 19th match of the season and extend his team lead in the category. The duo, UB's number one doubles combination, finished the regular season undefeated in MAC play with a 4-0 doubles mark. Kolomyts is 14-2 when playing at first doubles this season, scoring nine wins with sophomore Wojciech Starakiewicz early in the dual season. Kolomyts scored 20 doubles triumphs in the 2008-09 campaign as he earned All-MAC Second Team honors. His 61 doubles wins is second in school history while his 118 combined singles and doubles wins ranks him third overall.

"Kirill has done a great job of making changes in his game over the last month and his results show this," stated head coach Lee Nickell.

The Bulls (12-6, 5-0 MAC) are idle this weekend as the team prepares for the MAC Championships as the tournament's top seed. With the top seed, the Bulls earned a first round bye and will begin play in the semifinal round on Friday, April 29.
