Men's Tennis Win Streak Snapped by No. 59 Binghamton
BUFFALO, NY – Unable to capitalize on Saturday's 4-3 win over 74th-ranked Western Michigan, the University at Buffalo men's tennis team saw its five-match unbeaten streak and perfect home record snapped by 59th-ranked Binghamton, 5-2, at the University Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Bulls (9-4) scored a pair of singles victories in the number five and six matchups. At number five, Vusa Hove, scored a third-set super-tiebreaker win over Alexandre Haggai. Hove remained perfect when playing fifth singles as he downed Haggai, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9). A freshman, Hove improved his singles record to 9-1 and is 5-0 when inserted into the UB lineup at fifth singles.
Also posting a three-set win was sophomore Alex Kalinin, at number six, as he defeated Bastian Bornkessel, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Kalinin leads the team with 16 singles victories this year and also moved to 5-0 as the Bulls' number six player.
UB won one singles match against the Bearcats (18-1) as the number two duo of Wojciech Starakiewicz and George Tibil defeated Moshe Levy and Haggai, 8-4.
Sunday's match was the final home appearance for seniors Kirill Kolomyts and Eric Rothstein. The Bulls finished their home schedule with a 5-1 record, playing their first four matches indoors at the Miller Tennis Center before the weekend matches outdoors at the University Tennis Center against Western Michigan and Binghamton.
Two weeks remain in the regular season with UB traveling to Illinois for a pair of Mid-American Conference matches next weekend. UB meets Chicago State on Saturday, April 11 and Northern Illinois on Sunday, April 12. The Bulls are 2-0 in league play this season, their best start in conference history.
