MONROEVILLE, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team used victories in all six singles matches after being denied the opening point to knock off Duquesne, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville as the Bulls concluded their spring break weekend that included five matches in three states.
For just the third time this season and the first time in the last six matches, the Bulls (6-4) were denied in claiming the opening doubles point as Duquesne (6-7) won matches at numbers two and three. UB's lone doubles win came from the top combo of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Kirill Kolomyts. The UB duo, ranked tenth in the Northeast, improved their record to 9-1 with an 8-3 win over Steve Herchko and Mark Maciuch.
The Bulls swept all six singles matches to secure the win with four matches going in straight sets and two decided in three sets. Starakiewicz, the third-ranked singles player in the Northeast, downed Jeremy McClelland, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bulls finished their spring break campaign with three wins in five matches, playing three in Florida and one back home in Buffalo before Saturday's contest in Western Pennsylvania. "This has been a good spring break for us," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We learned a lot and fought through adversity today against a good Duquesne team. We came out flat in doubles, but came together in singles to give a complete team effort. We are very excited to start conference match play in two weeks."
UB begins Mid-American Conference play on March 27 against Toledo.
