Bulls Open MAC Play With Shocker Over NIU

The University at Buffalo men's soccer team got only two shots on goal against 18th ranked Northern Illinois but made both shots count as the Bulls scored a 2-1 overtime victory over the Huskies in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. The win improved the Bulls to 6-5-1 overall.

Fedler On The Roof

Saturday's hero turned out to be freshman defender Lukas Fedler. Fedler's header at 107:04 gave the Bulls the victory as he scored off a free kick from junior Matthew Chereson. It was Fedler's second goal of the season after he netted his first collegiate goal in UB's overtime win over Niagara on September 23. The assist was Chereson's first of the season and the junior's second of his career after getting his first helper in the 2009 season.

Getting the Better of a Ranked Opponent

The victory over Northern Illinois was the first win by the Bulls over a nationally-ranked opponent since 1997. The Bulls scored an overtime victory at No. 19 Notre Dame, 3-2, in South Bend on September 13, 1997. Steve Butcher scored the golden goal at 99:37. UB plays another ranked team later this season when No. 4 Akron comes to UB Stadium on October 21.

Hesch Hashes It Out

Following the win over the Huskies, interim head coach David Hesch commented on his team's play. "I'm very proud of the boys today. We had a plan and stuck to it. NIU is a very good team and the boys played very composed. Max Kowal scored a great goal to put us on the board early and Lukas [Fedler] found himself open off a set play for the game winner. It was a total team effort and we deserved to win."

Scouting the Falcons

The Bulls host Bowling Green at UB Stadium on Sunday, October 9 at 4:00 pm in their lone contest for the week. Bowling Green heads into Sunday's match 7-2-1 overall and 1-0 in MAC play following a 3-0 win against Florida Atlantic on October 2. BGSU is riding a four-match unbeaten string which includes three straight wins and tie to begin their streak. Danny Baraldi leads the Falcons with 13 points (three goals, seven assists), while Rodcliff Hall is the leading goal scorer with four. Goalkeeper Michael Weist is 6-1-0 in his seven starts and has shut out five opponents while sporting a 0.42 goals against average.
