BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo head men's soccer coach John Astudillo will be taking a medical leave of absence from the sidelines this fall it was announced today by Warde Manuel, Vice President and Director of Athletics.
Astudillo has posted an overall record of 190-173-35 in his 22 seasons on the UB sidelines, the most wins of any coach in Bulls' history. He is expected to return to his helm at the conclusion of the fall season. Associate head coach Dave Hesch will take on the interim head coach title until that time.
Hesch is entering his 10th season with the Bulls after serving as head coach at Lake Erie College. Since being named associate head coach in 2005, he has helped the Bulls advance to a pair of MAC Championship games.
"Our thoughts are with Coach Astudillo and his family in hopes of a return to full health and our sidelines after this season," said Manuel. "He has been a tremendous leader in our highly-successful men's soccer program and we look forward to his continued guidance of the program in the future. We are fortunate to have a coach like Dave Hesch who is able to step in and give us the continuity and leadership we need to have a great season in 2011."
The Bulls will open the 2011 season on Friday, Aug. 26 with a game at St. Bonaventure.
