BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team hung on for a 3-2 victory over visiting Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon in the Bulls' home opener at UB Stadium. The win evens UB's record at 2-2 while the Colonials fall to 0-4.
UB jumped on top in the first half in the 20th minute. Juha Kaartoluoma scored the opening goal as he took a throw in from Casey Derkacz, controlling the ball in front of the goal and scoring from 10 yards.
The Bulls increased the lead to 3-0 with two second half goals midway through the period. In the 63rd minute, Mike Unwin scored following a rebound in front of the net. In the 79th minute, Andy Tiedt scored on a breakaway, taking a pass from Maksym Kowal to put UB ahead 3-0.
Robert Morris then quickly scored on a pair of penalty kicks late in the contest to narrow the margin to 3-2. UB then applied pressure on the defensive end as two RMU shots sailed wide in the final five minutes.
Ryan Aubrey made two saves for the Bulls while Robert Morris keeper Toba Bolaji stopped eight UB shots. The Bulls had a 19-11 edge in shots and had seven corner kicks to one for the Colonials.
The Bulls host St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:30 pm at UB Stadium in their next action.
