Bulls Fall in Close Conference Matchup to Huskies 1-0

DEKALB, IL – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team fell to Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinois, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the NIU Soccer and Track and Field Complex.

The Bulls and Huskies played to a scoreless first half with each team registering five shots. The Huskies were unable to take advantage of ten corner kicks due to the Bulls' solid effort in their own end.

In the second half, the Huskies scored the lone goal of the contest in the 48th minute off a throw-in deep inside the Bulls' end. Midfielder Rocco Taglia tossed a long throw into the Bulls' box filled with members of both teams battling for position. As the ball landed, forward Josh Karstens headed it  into the net for a 1-0 Northern Illinois lead.

Following the goal, Buffalo stormed back with a shot by junior Mike Unwin that went slightly wide right of the goal. Throughout the second half, both teams continued to battle for opportunities.

In the contest, Northern Illinois held a 12-10 shot advantage. The offensive tandem of senior Dan Bulley and Unwin led the Bulls' attack while the defensive duo of senior Steffen Thoresen and Tom Beckvermit provided the Bulls' protection in the back. Alex Marrello gave a well-balanced effort at midfield, leading the Bulls with four shots and a blocked shot.

"I was very happy with the progress we made as the quality of our play stepped up quite a bit. Overall, our quality of play was excellent both offensively and defensively. We defended and attacked well," said head coach John Astudillo. "It was a well-balanced effort, especially up front."

Following two road contests, the Bulls (5-7, 0-2 MAC) will return home to UB Stadium as they face MAC opponent Bowling Green on Friday, October 16 at 7:30 pm.
