Jim Kwitchoff is in his 14th season at the University at Buffalo and has served as an assistant for Reggie Witherspoon throughout most of his coaching career. His on-court duties focus on developing the post players, while he also handles administrative duties and serves as a recruiter and the summer camp director.

Under his guidance, the Bulls have developed some of the finest low-post players not just in the Mid-American Conference, but among all Mid-Major schools. From 2011 MAC Freshman of the Year Javon McCrea to 2012 MAC Player of the Year Mitchell Watt, the Bulls are never short on talent down on the blocks.

Kwitchoff has had a hand in the success of a number of basketball programs in Western New York.  He began as an assistant at Cardinal O’Hara High School in 1989, where he played a significant role in helping to develop the O’Hara team that won the 1994 New York State championship.  After leaving O’Hara, Kwitchoff joined forces with Witherspoon at Sweet Home High School, where the Panthers won four consecutive division titles from 1994 to 1997.

Following his tenure at Sweet Home, Kwitchoff served as assistant coach for Witherspoon at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.  The Kats finished as the Region III runner up in 1997-98 with a 19-10 record.  In 1998-99, ECC was crowned Division I, Region III Champions with a 24-5 record, reaching a national ranking of 17th in the country. That team also finished second nationally in team defense.  

Kwitchoff was a co-founder along with Witherspoon of the Buffalo Team ACE All-Star Program. Through their efforts, Team ACE won 17 AAU tournaments and helped in developing more than 20 players who went on to compete at the Division I level.

As a player, Kwitchoff captained Sweet Home High School to the 1984 NY State Class A public school title and a Top 25 national ranking.  He was inducted into the Sweet Home Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, where he was recognized for his accomplishments in basketball, football, and track and field.  Kwitchoff was the 1984 New York State discus champion and second-team All-American.  He is a 1988 graduate of Boston College where he was a member of the Eagles football teams that won the 1985 Cotton Bowl and 1986 Hall of Fame Bowl.  Kwitchoff earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration as well as his master’s degree in educational administration from Boston College.

In addition to his coaching duties, Kwitchoff worked for 10 years in high school administration prior to joining the Bulls’ staff. He most recently served as an assistant principal at Lockport High School.

Kwitchoff resides in Wheatfield, NY with his wife Tricia, daughters, Madison (10) and Julia (5) and son, Ty (7).
