Bulls Square off with Bobcats in Midweek Tilt
ATHENS, OH - Fresh off a thrilling win to open the Mid-American Conference season, the Buffalo men's basketball team heads to Ohio for two MAC East road contests. First up will be the Ohio Bobcats (12-3, 0-1 MAC), with the Bulls hoping to carry back momentum from last season's historic comeback in Convocation Center.
In its last game out, Buffalo (8-4, 1-0 MAC) came back from a slight halftime deficit against Kent State to pull out a 66-65 win. Javon McCrea continued to excel against the Flashes, putting up a game high 25 points while Titus Robinson provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. While the Bulls were unable to find a rhythm from the outside (hitting four of 15 three point attempts), the team outrebounded Kent State 42-30 and limited them to 36 percent in the second half. UB continues to be led by the frontcourt of Javon McCrea and Mitchell Watt, who have combined to average 32.8 points, 15.5 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game. McCrea is also the reigning MAC East player of the week.
Ohio, despite holding the best record in the conference heading out of the non-conference schedule, dropped its first game of the MAC season on Saturday, losing 67-57 at Bowling Green. The game will feature two of the top distributing point guards in not just the conference, but the country, as Jarod Oldham (6.5 assists/game) will be paired up with Ohio's D.J. Cooper, who has dished out 94 assists and has a 2.23 assist/turnover ratio. Cooper also leads the team in scoring, with 14.1 points per game despite shooting only 36 percent from the floor. The Bobcats have excelled on defense, allowing only 28.4 percent from three to its opponents and forcing 18.7 turnovers per game. Ohio is hoping to snap a brief two-game losing streak, during which the team has shot under 38 percent in the losses.
This will be the 31st meeting between the two teams, with Ohio holding a 22-8 advantage. In the more recent history, the two teams have an even 4-4 record. Last season the road team came out on top. Tipoff for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 7 pm. Fans can tune into the game on 1230 WECK, with Josh Whetzel on the call.
