BUFFALO, NY – A third member of the 2010 UB secondary has entered an NFL training camp as four-time first-team All-MAC selection Davonte Shannon was signed by the Washington Redskins. Shannon finished his Buffalo career as the school's all-time leading tackler.
Just the fourth player in MAC history to be named to the first team all four years, Shannon had 461 career tackles, including 258 solo stops. He recorded 15 or more tackles nine times in his career, including a career-high 20 tackles back in 2008 against Army. During his senior season, Shannon had a career-best four interceptions, while adding two pass breakups and fumble recovery.
Shannon is the second UB defensive back to join the NFC East this season as cornerback Josh Thomas was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the draft back in April. Also joining a camp this season is Domonic Cook, who signed with his hometown Buffalo Bills. Shannon will also be joining a defense in Washington that is coached by former UB defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.
Shannon is the ninth UB player expected to be in NFL Training Camps this summer: Davonte Shannon (Redskins), Domonic Cook (Bills), Josh Thomas (Cowboys), Naaman Roosevelt (Bills), Mike Newton (Colts), James Starks (Packers), Drew Willy (Jets), Jamey Richard (Colts) and Trevor Scott (Raiders).
