New York Mills Standout Fred Russ Added To Football Recruiting Class of 2011
BUFFALO, NY – Head football coach Jeff Quinn announced that Fred Russ, a two-sport standout at New York Mills HS, has signed a scholarship to continue his academic and athletic pursuits at the University at Buffalo.
Russ, a 6-4, 245-pound defensive end, chose the Bulls after being offered scholarships to play either football or basketball collegiately by a number of schools. Russ was named the New York State Sports Writer's Association Class D Player of the Year in the Empire State after leading his basketball team to a perfect 24-0 record and its first NYS championship since 1982.
Russ was also a first-team all-state selection in football after leading the Marauders to a league title last fall for head coach Anthony Ricco. As a tight end he led the team with 25 receptions for 356 yards (14.2 yards per catch) and seven touchdowns and paced the team with 67 solo tackles as middle linebacker. To show his versatility, he also handed the placekicking and punting duties for New York Mills.
Russ also competes in the 100 meters and the discus on the Marauders' track and field team.
"Fred is an outstanding prospect with great athletic ability who we feel has a lot of upside," said Quinn. "He's an outstanding competitor and we're excited to have him."
