KENT, OH - The Buffalo Bulls (7-19, 1-7 MAC) ended its three-game series against Kent State (18-13, 9-0 MAC) Sunday afternoon, losing to the Golden Flashes 6-3. After surrendering early leads to the Flashes in the first two games of the series, the Bulls found themselves in an early hole and were unable to get back on top.
Trailing 3-0 in the third inning, Buffalo found two runners in scoring position right away thanks to a leadoff walk from Jon Mestas and a double from Dan Scahill. A groundout from Tom Murphy was enough to score Mestas, but that would be all for the inning. In the fourth inning, Mike Scarcello drew a walk out of a full count and moved up to second on a groundout. Matt Pollock stepped in with two outs and delivered an opposite-field single that was enough to bring in Scarcello and draw UB within one, 3-2.
In the fifth inning, the Bulls would tie the game up thanks to another big hit from Scahill. The senior hit his second double of the game and would move up to third on a groundout. Mike Burke hit a two-out grounder deep in the hole at shortstop and was able to beat out the throw and allow Scahill to come in with the game-tying run.
Kent State would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning, and added runs in the sixth and eighth to pull out the sweep. Freshman pitcher Mike McGee made his first career conference start and pitched 4.2 innings, striking out two batters. River McWilliams threw 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and had six punchouts.
The Bulls will be back out on Tuesday for a single game at home against Canisius. This will be the third meeting of the season for the two cross-town rivals. First pitch at Amherst Audubon Field will be at 3 pm.
