HANOVER, MD - After riding high on a sterling outing from its pitching staff less than 24 hours earlier, the Buffalo baseball team returned to its bread and butter Sunday afternoon, scoring 27 runs in a rout of Long Island University. Eight Bulls recorded two or more hits, and Tom Murphy drove in eight runs, a modern-day program record.

Down 3-0 going to the third inning, the Buffalo offense scored three runs on a two-run double from Murphy and a sacrifice fly from Dan Scahill that scored Matt Pollock to tie the game. The Bulls would hit the cover off the ball in a huge fourth inning that would give it a lead it would not relinquish.

After an LIU pitching change, Thomas Richards reached on a walk and moved all the way around to score after a bunt and a pair of wild pitches. Pollock and Murphy wound up with two-run doubles and Scahill had a run-scoring single to cap the seven-run inning, an inning that saw the Bulls bat around and bring 11 batters to the plate. In the fifth inning, Jon Mestas hit a triple and would score with two outs thanks to yet another wild pitch.

The game would be put well out of reach in the sixth, as the Bulls scored nine runs on nine hits to take a six-run lead and expand it to a 20-5 advantage. The team loaded the bases with just one out, then scored runs on a single by River McWilliams and a hit by pitch drawn by Ryan Tulloch. Pollock then drove in another run on a single, with Jason Kanzler following with a two-run single that moved Pollock to second. They would score immediately on Murphy's triple, and Scahill hit a triple of his own in the next at bat to drive in Murphy. The scoring would be capped off by a Mike Burke double that brought in Scahill standing up.

After a four-run bottom frame by Long Island, the team brought in a trio of runs in the seventh thanks to the effort of a pair of Bulls coming off the bench. With a runner on second, Andy Smietana drew a walk after relieving Mestas, and Jordan Camp entered the game and was an instant impact, hitting a double that drove in two runs.

Buffalo would continue to pile on until the very end, putting another four runs up on the board in the ninth. Singles from McWilliams and Smietana led to a Pollock RBI single, followed by Camp sac fly. Murphy would bring a fitting end to the day, putting his second home run in as many days over the outfield wall for a two-run shot.

Despite allowing nine runs on 13 hits, starter Kevin Hughes took the win on Sunday. Corey Paige closed the game out with two innings of one-hit ball. The first four hitters in the UB lineup combined for thirteen hits and a jaw-dropping 20 RBI, highlighted by Murphy's eight. His RBI total topped the previous modern-day program record of seven that was set by Mike Flaherty in 2001 against Marshall.

Now 4-6 this season, the Bulls have won four of the past five games. It will be a busy week ahead for Buffalo, as it will play five games in the next seven days. First up will be Towson on Tuesday for a 3 pm, followed by a Wednesday game against Maryland-Baltimore County. Then for the weekend, Buffalo will head to the City of Brotherly Love to play La Salle on Friday, St. Joseph's on Saturday, and Villanova on Sunday.
