Division Of Athletics Posts Program-Best 3.039 GPA

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics finished an exceptional semester in the classroom in the Fall of 2012, post a school-best 3.039 GPA.  This marked the first time that the Athletic Department has surpassed a 3.0 GPA in back-to-back semesters.

11 teams finished with grade point averages aver 3.0, led by women’s tennis, who had an all-time high of 3.607, leading all teams.  Baseball led on the men’s side, with a program-best 3.05.  Other highlights included women’s basketball (3.081), which had the Most Improved GPA amongst the 18 sports and football (2.816), which finished with its high GPA as a team. 

Other teams that finished above the department average were women’s soccer (3.393), Women’s Cross Country (3.308), Women’s Track and Field (3.276), Volleyball (3.247), Rowing (3.242), women’s swimming and diving (3.094) and softball (3.074).

Individually, a school-record 312 student-athletes finished with a 3.0 or better, including 163 that were over a 3.5.  Additionally, 19 student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 semesters, highlighted by junior rower Jean Kang, who took 24 credit hours with classes such as human anatomy, physiology and organic chemistry.

“Our student-athletes continue to raise the standard for academic performance,” said Dr. Donald Reed, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Sports Management.  “We are extremely proud of the efforts put forth by our student-athletes academically and we will continue to challenge them to be even better.  This is a tremendous accomplishment for our student-athletes, coaches and academic services staff.”
