UB Athletics Announces Upgrades to Alumni Arena
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena will be showcasing a new look and game-day atmosphere as the winter season of athletic and cultural events gets underway. Included in the enhancements are state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems as well the installation of a new video and scoring system. The project is a collaborative effort between UB Facilities, Planning & Design and the Division of Athletics with funding provided by the university’s critical maintenance fund and private dollars.
The result is a culmination of a multi-phase project that began in late-May. The first phase of the project included structural reinforcement of the arena, which was designed by DiDonato and Associates.
The second phase of the project included the installation of the state-of-the art sound and lighting systems. The new sound and light systems will provide a more enjoyable fan experience and is capable of multi-level programming which complements the multi-purpose use of Alumni Arena. The sound system was designed by Acoustic Dimensions and features both athletic and special event set-ups with speaker clusters, new amplifiers and acoustical panels. The lighting system was designed by Lighting Dimensions and includes various types of lighting elements that will dramatically increase the candle power, environmental efficiency, and cost less to operate than the previous system.
The most exciting and fan enhancing aspects of the renovation is thethird phase of the project whichincludes an integrated video and scoring system designedby Daktronics. The new four-sided, center-hung LED display will provide live video, instant replays, and animations. The displays measure eight feet high and 14 feet wide and will be accompanied by an LED ring underneath which measures 3 feet high and 52 feet in diameter. Rounding out the scoring system will be new fixed-digit displays in both end-zones and seventy feet of LED scorer’s tables at court level. A control room is currently being designed by Sports Display Systems and Audio-Video Corporation to support the new technology.
The new scorer’s tables and end-boards will be up and running for the men’s basketball home opener on Friday, November 11th versus Saint Peters. The center-hung display will debut at the men’s basketball game on January 7th against Mid-American Conference rival Kent State. The scoreboards at either end of the arena have already been used for volleyball matches this fall.
“We are extremely excited thatour fans, alumni and students will experience adramatically improved Alumni Arena,” said Warde Manuel, Vice President and Director of Athletics. “The enhancements in lighting, sound and the addition of both end and center court video displays will put our arena into the upper echelon of on-campus facilities in the Northeast. We feel that these changes will greatly enhance not only the experience of people attending athletic events, but also our numerous other cultural and social events – concerts, Distinguished Speakers Series and commencements.”
