Five UB Student-Athletes Named SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award Winners

BUFFALO, NY - Five University at Buffalo student-athletes have been selected as SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award winners for 2009-10. The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award was created in 2003-04 to recognize students who have combined academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels at SUNY schools. One award winner was selected in each sport at each of the three athletic levels - for a total of 78 students in 20 different sports from 31 SUNY campuses. For the sixth time in seven years, UB was either tied or had the lead for the most selections amongst Division I SUNY schools. UB had seven selections each of the first two years and four in 2005-06. In 2007-08, the Bulls had six student-athletes honored, while last season they led the way with seven selections. This year, Buffalo, Albany and Stony Brook all had five selections, while Binghamton had four. Buffalo's winners this year were as follows:

John Boyer (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg)
Men's Basketball, 3.566 GPA, Physical Therapy
Boyer was named a member of the Academic All-MAC team and was an ESPN The Magazine All-District selection. He led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.70) to go along with 7.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. Boyer finished the season with 159 assists - the fifth best single season total in school history and the most assists by a UB player since the Bulls joined the Mid-American Conference in 1998.

Brown was named Academic All-MAC as well as a first-team All-MAC Selection. Brown was also named the league's Defensive Player of the year. Brown ended the year with single-season school records in both points and rebounds. She finished the 2009-10 season sixth in the nation in rebounding and 12th in the country in field goal percentage. Brown was also named MAC East Player of the Week four times this year, while also being named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week once.

Cannon was named Academic All-MAC for the first time in his career this past year. Cannon posted an impressive 4-1 record against MAC opponents. At the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, Cannon captured the individual title, posting a 4-0 record including an upset over 16th nationally-ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell in the championship bout. At the MAC Championships, Cannon finished in third place due to an injury default in the bout for true second. For the first time in his career, Cannon represented UB at the NCAA National Tournament, earning a spot as a National Qualifier.

Maskulinski was named Academic All-MAC during the indoor season. She also earned second-team All-MAC honors for her performance in the pole vault at the 2010 MAC Indoor Championships, finishing second at 12-11.50 (3.95m). Maskulinski established UB’s indoor pole vault record with a leap of 13-9.25 (4.20m) at the Penn State National Meet to earn an NCAA provisional qualification. The vault was the 18th-best in the nation during the season. She was also named to the league's outdoor All-Academic team in 2009.

Tamchyna was named to the Academic All-MAC Team for the third straight year. At the MAC Championship meet this year, he was a member of two record breaking relays, swimming the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay that placed third with a school record time of 1:30.63, as well as the 200 freestyle relay that placed second in a record breaking time of 1:21.93. Individually, Tamchyna placed sixth in the 200 backstroke with a lifetime-best time of 1:47.76 and 10th in the 50 freestyle in a lifetime-best time of 20.99 and was named to the All-MAC Second Team at the conclusion of the MAC Championship meet.
